Ride Iceland – Westfjords Way

kr.225.000

Our Ride Iceland series offers guided, semi-supported cycling adventures through Iceland’s wildest landscapes. Ride big days, remote roads, and unforgettable routes with van support and luggage transfers, while still earning every kilometer under your own power.

These tours are designed for riders who want to ride the full routes. The expectation is that you ride the route yourself, from start to finish, but you’re never truly on your own. Van support (when needed), luggage transfers, mechanical assistance, and a guide are there, giving you the freedom to focus on the ride while knowing support is close by.

Ride at your own pace. There’s no prize for being first to the top or finishing first at the end of the day. Our groups welcome a range of riding abilities and paces, and everyone is encouraged to find their own rhythm on the road. The goal isn’t to race – it’s to experience Iceland, take on the big days, and finish each of the rides.

Meet your host

Tyler Wacker

Tyler has called Ísafjörður home for several years. He first came to the Westfjords as a student at the local university, fell in love with the region, and decided to stay and become part of the community.

An avid cyclist and outdoor adventurer, Tyler owns and operates Bikepacking Iceland, a local cycling and adventure hub based in Ísafjörður and Keflavík. Through his work, he spends much of his time exploring the Westfjords and helping visitors experience the region beyond the typical tourist routes.

Tyler will be riding the route alongside you as your guide. He’ll be there to set the pace when needed, help navigate the route, offer mechanical and logistical support, and share the experience from the saddle. Another team member will be joining us in the support vehicle.

Ride the Westfjords Way on a six-day cycling expedition through the Westfjords.

Day 1 – Monday, July 26, 2027: Day 1: Shake out ride to Bolafjall

Welcome to the first day of Ride Iceland. Today’s route is a shake out ride to Bolafjall and back. We will setup bikes in the morning if necessary and leave on the ride after lunch so the timing is flexible to arrive before the tour or the morning of.

We will ride Óshlið, the old road to Bolungarvík that was abandoned after the tunnel opened in 2010. We will reach the town of Bolungarvík before climbing a gravel mountain pass towards Bolafjall which is a rewarding climb with a viewing platform on top. On a clear day, they say you can see all the way to Greenland! Let’s take in the view before heading back to Ísafjörður. The support van will be with us in case we want to stop by the Bolungarvík pool on the way back.

Dinner: group reservation at Húsið

Day 2 – Tuesday, July 27, 2027: Ísafjörður to Heydalur

The Westfjords Way begins. The first day is long but without so much elevation. The ride is mostly paved with rolling coastal hills. The views are incredible as you wind in and out of every fjord, spotting the glacier if it is a clear day.

Along the way, our halfway point is Litlibær waffle and coffee turfhouse. We regroup before continuing on to the final destiantion Heydaulr. We’re welcomed with a natural hot spring and a swimming pool.

Dinner: group reservation at Heydalur

Day 3 – Wednesday, July 28, 2027: Heydalur to Djúpidalur

Breakfast is served at Hotel Heydalur. We will pack a few sandwiches to-go from the breakfast table since there is very little resupply on this day.

The day starts by going completing the rest of the fjord on a good gravel mix. We will go around one more fjord before climbing up Steingrimsfjarðaheiði. It is steep in some parts, but mostly a gentle paved climb. Once you reach the top we will take a right turn to descend down Þorskarfjarðarheiði. This descent is on gravel and it is amazing. There is an old mountain hut that we can regroup and have lunch at. Once we reach the bottom, turn right and make one more short but steep gravel climb before descending to Djúpidalur. There are no food options here so you we will need to have some food packed for this day (recommended dehydrated meal). There is a full kitchen to cook your food including a water boiler.

Dinner: make your own at Djúpidalur (full kitchen)

Day 4 – Thursday, July 29, 2027: Djúpidalur to Flókalundur

Welcome to the southern Westfjords where the day is remote with great views over Breiðafjörður and its many islands. It is a mix of pavement and gravel along the coast till you reach Hótel Flókalundur. There is no resupply on this day as well but we will regroup halfway to have lunch. Once we reach Flókalundur, they have a restaurant, a convenient store and there is a hot pot to go and relax in by the ocean.

Dinner: group reservation at Hótel Flókalundur

Day 5 – Friday, July 30, 2027: Flókalundur to Þingeyri

There is breakfast at the hotel and we will make to-go sandwiches. The day starts hard, with a steep paved climb to the top of Dynjandisheiði. It is a double peaked mountain pass so don’t be fooled once you reach the first peak. Once we are on the real descent, wrap around and see Dynjandi, the Westfjords most famous waterfall. We will regroup here for lunch. You can also hike up to the base of the waterfall.

Afterwards, there is a cafe at Hrafnseyri, where we will also regroup as it’s the last resupply before Svalvogar, the famous low-tide double track road. This road is rough and remote, but very worth it. It will take longer than we expect so be prepared. The road didn’t connect all the way around the peninsula, but a determined farmer wanted to make a road to his friend’s farm that was just around the peninsula. He took matter into his own hands and made it with his own bulldozer, aptly named Teaspoon.

Dinner: group reservation at Hótel KEX

Day 6 – Saturday, July 31, 2027: Þingeyri to Ísafjörður

The final day. Enjoy breakfast at KEX Þingeyri.  This day looks short but features one of the largest and most exposed climbs of the route – the final climb before descending back to Ísafjörður. Before the final climb, we will have snacks and coffee and Kaffi Sól at kilometer 34. It is also possible to ride through the tunnel if you are not feeling up for the final climb. Just make sure you have a reflective vest and good front and rear lights. Descend to Ísafjörður and return to the Fjord Hub to celebrate.

Dinner: celebratory dinner at the all-you-can-eat fish buffet Tjöruhúsið (vegetarian options available)
